Containing Covid19 is crucial in the fight against the virus. We need to provide the best hygiene we can for all environments and one way is by harnessing the power of data driven hygiene.
As we go into the UK’s second lockdown, managers, building owners and business owners are under pressure to provide workplaces which are safer and which are best able to prevent the spread of Covid19.
Getting people back to work is an absolute economic necessity. There has been £480bn in lost in commercial activity (CEBR study August 2020) due to Covid19, the longer we stay immobilised the worse it gets.
“The economy needs to have people back at work,” Dominic Raab The Foreign Secretary said the coronavirus lockdown had led to a “massive shrinking of the economy”.
Of course 89% of employers want their workforce back at work; they are noticing that in some cases working from home just isn’t as effective. And whilst some employees report that working from home constantly is an isolating and lonely experience, they are still not keen to get back to the office.
Are we containing Covid19?
Stats show that “FEAR” of being contaminated at work by a colleague or infected surfaces is causing staff to be reluctant to get back to work.
1 in 5 are not washing hands.
95% of workers are worried about getting infected with Covid19.
33% are concerned if their colleagues are not sanitizing their hands.
74% of bankers don’t want to return to offices.
These fears are totally understandable when you realise how fast a virus can travel within a building as this Arizona study reported.
A virus can spread through a building within two hours of coming into contact with just one surface. The team found that when a virus, such as norovirus contaminated a surface such as a door handle or a coffee maker, 60% of surfaces in the building were contaminated with the virus within 2 hours. That is fast!
We need to act fast to stop potential contact based viruses from entering or spreading in buildings, make them safe and to reassure staff and their families that it is safe for them to return to work.
The government has put the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in charge of ensuring that workplaces are safe.
Cleaning, hygiene and handwashing to make your workplace COVID-secure
Handwashing and using hand sanitiser
The Government suggest that business use signs and posters to help your workers practice good handwashing techniques and to remind them to catch coughs and sneezes in a tissue or arm and avoid touching their faces.
They say managers and building owners need to provide:
handwashing facilities with running water, soap and paper towels or hand dryers
hand sanitiser at locations in addition to washrooms, such as sanitising stations
hand sanitiser nearby for people getting in and out of vehicles or handling deliveries, if they are unable to wash their hands
However, with 1 in 5 not washing hands, managers don’t actually know who is or is not sanitising, this endangers all other occupiers in a building! To make sure all of this is be followed correctly and efficiently, we should make use of data driven hygiene management.
Data driven hygiene management closes the fear gap
Without the right data, managers have no idea how often sanitisers are being used in a building and who is practicing proper hand hygiene and who is not.
We can put up all the notices we like but if we do not know if people are washing or sanitizing their hands how can we know if we have a safe Covid secure building.
American Cleaning Institute Survey found that there has even been a decline in handwashing practices since the beginning of the Pandemic
